ICE
Framework

Prioritize using Impact, Confidence, Ease.

Overview

ICE is a simple scoring system for prioritizing ideas, features, or experiments based on three factors: Impact (potential value), Confidence (certainty of success), and Ease (effort required). Score each on a scale (e.g., 1-10), then calculate ICE score = (Impact * Confidence) / Ease. Higher scores indicate higher priority.

Why It Matters

In product management, resources are limited. ICE helps teams quickly evaluate and rank opportunities without over-analysis, focusing on high-leverage items.

Key Components

  • Impact: How much does this move the needle?
  • Confidence: How sure are we about the impact?
  • Ease: How hard is it to implement?

How to Apply

List ideas; score each factor 1-10; calculate average or total; sort descending; discuss top items.

Examples

  • Growth teams prioritizing A/B tests
  • Product managers evaluating backlog items.

Pros/Cons and Pitfalls

Pros: Quick and simple to use. Cons: Can be subjective without clear guidelines. Pitfalls: Over-reliance on gut feelings; inconsistent scoring across team members.

Variations/Adaptations

Modified ICE with weighted scores or additional factors like Urgency.
