RICE
Framework
Prioritize features using Reach, Impact, Confidence, Effort.
Overview
RICE is a scoring model for prioritizing product features or initiatives. It considers Reach (users affected), Impact (value per user), Confidence (certainty), and Effort (work required). Score = (Reach * Impact * Confidence) / Effort.
Why It Matters
Helps teams make data-informed decisions, balancing potential upside with costs.
Key Components
- Reach: Number of users or events affected in a time period.
- Impact: Per-user value, often scored 0.25-3.
- Confidence: Percentage certainty (e.g., 100% high, 80% medium).
- Effort: Person-months or points required.
How to Apply
Define metrics; score each initiative; calculate and sort scores; review top items.
Examples
- Intercom prioritizing messaging features
- SaaS teams ranking checkout optimizations.
Pros/Cons and Pitfalls
Pros: More comprehensive than ICE by including Reach. Cons: Requires more data estimation. Pitfalls: Inaccurate Reach estimates can skew scores; overemphasis on quantifiable metrics.
Variations/Adaptations
